Vibram Open 2017
This was truly a tournament to remember. Not only for the stellar course and the dedicated people involved in the event, but also for the excellent show displayed by many the top players, right down to the nail biting finish. For those of us who followed the live coverage (round 2 and onwards), it was truly a blast to watch our resident raptor Ricky Wysocki getting his groove back, but we also saw the emergence of a new fan favourite in team member Nicholas Masters going head to head with the big guns.
The first round saw Ricky and Nick finish tied for the lead, with a slew of top players chasing. The hunt was on. A windy 2nd round put some spokes in the wheel for Ricky who dropped a few places, but Nick held on to finish tied for 2nd, thanks to a handfull of birdies on the back 9. The third round treated the players with nearly perfect conditions and Ricky showed us why he is the current World Champion, scoring the hot round of 10 under par, retaking the lead by two. Nick had a steady 1017 rated round, but eventually fell back to third card.
Braving the tough conditions on a rainy and miserable round 4, Ricky battled hard trying to fend of the chasing pack. It got a bit nerve-wracking on hole 14, when reports came in from the chase card that Eagle McMahon just had tied for the lead and Ricky, in a bit of a slip up, gave his Stiletto an unfortunate bath. Anyone could have crumbled for less, but with solid birdies on 15 and 17, Ricky swung the momentum to his favour once again and with a safe par on 18 took home his second Vibram Open win (the first player to do so). Many Congratulations to this epic victory from us at Latitude 64°.
The rain got the better of Nick during the final round, but with his calm and collected demenour, and solid performance in the early rounds it was a pleasure to watch. He is definitely a man for the future and a great ambassador for the sport and for Team 64°. Way to represent.
A big shout out also goes to Matt Orum who finished tied for 11th place, thanks in part to a magnificent 1057 rated third round, and overall solid discgolf throughout the weekend. Great to see Matt.
